Why we are here
Hope in the Valley's purpose is simple. When a health diagnosis we receive one day takes our breath away and makes us wonder what next, there are other people who understand that well and would like to come alongside you.
We'd like you to meet a few of us...

When I retired, I had expectations of the many things I would enjoy doing, including volunteer work, gardening, art projects, etc. However, being diagnosed with multiple myeloma – a type of blood cancer – changed my plans dramatically. With treatment, most of the symptoms of the cancer have gone into remission, but there is the ever-present knowledge that this can change at any time.
I am thankful and blessed for this group and you are welcome here too.

Hi, I’m Dave. My senior years after retirement were about everything I had hoped for, but the last 5 years have changed things. I was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. It is an incurable lung disease. In 2023 I was also diagnosed with stage 3 prostate cancer and 5 months later my left lung collapsed. A lot in life has changed.
Hope in the Valley Newberg is such a good thing in this season of my life. Hearing other people’s stories in life has become so helpful.

My story... In March of 2025, we'd been in retirement for over 3 years and were trying to fill up our calendar with our new Springer Spaniel, Beau. Within a month however, I had been diagnosed with a brain tumor, had surgery and the outcome revealed a terminal cancer. (So far, steady and stable)
For those dealing with some kind of life-altering diagnosis, Hope in the Valley has been such an encouragement.

A few years ago, what started as worsening migraines and strange vision changes led to the discovery of a very rare brain AVM. Since then, my journey has included strokes, paralysis, intensive rehab, chronic illness, a brain hemorrhage, and learning to rebuild life in ways I never expected.
Today, I’m still walking through recovery and still waiting on answers, but I’m deeply grateful to be here. If you or a friend has experienced a life-altering diagnosis, join us.

I’ve been married to my husband Dave for 59 years. Our comfortable life was interrupted a few years ago when he was diagnosed with an incurable pulmonary fibrosis followed a couple years later with stage 3 cancer. While being treated for his cancer, his left lung collapsed, landing him in the hospital for 30 days.
None of our lives are simple, but they can be so much better than we thought. This is an enjoyable group of people dealing with life-changing diagnoses, and we come together to share our experiences.
